Description

Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). Brougham (Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, 1778-1868; Lord Chancellor from 24 November 1830- 9 July 1834), as the character Max (from Carl Maria von Weber's opera, Der Freischutz, 1821), but with a barrister's wig upon his head, fires an arrow which misses the target of 'REFORM / Bull's / Eye', which is pinned to a tree at the far right. The word 'YORKSHIRE' is printed at his feet. Printed speech within a bubble above him: 'What dark'ning power / is ruling o'er me?'. The figure of Lord Grey (Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, 1764-1845; Prime Minister from 22 November 1830 to 16 July 1834), as the spirit Zamiel, his arms raised, stands behind Brougham at the far left. The artist's initials in monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'THE MAGIC SHOT / A new version of Der Freischutz'. The publisher's details printed below: 'Published by Thos McLean, 26 Haymarket, Decr 3rd 1830.'. Printer's details below the border at lower right: 'Printed by C. Motte, 23, Leicester Square.'. Handwritten in graphite at upper right: '96'. See 16386,_Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires_, Vol. XI, 1828-1832, M.D. George, published 1954, pp. 388-9. A number '[96]' printed in square brackets in the right-hand margin on p. 388 relates to the handwritten number at upper right, both referencing the sequence of John Doyle's Political Sketches series.
