Description

Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). An Irishman (Lord Plunket) with a basket of fish on his left arm strikes the head of another (Lord Londonderry) who has hooked a fish from the basket and is dressed as a soldier. John Bull dressed as a Beadle is seen at the far left: 'Hello! What's the row?'. Lord Wharncliffe stands behind John Bull to the right: 'Oh! only a few Irishmen at their / favourite amusement'. To his right, behind the Beadle, is Wellington. Ellenborough stands behind Londonderry: 'I sat! don't hit the man so hard'. Behind Plunket is G.R. Dawson, Peel's brother-in-law, who takes the cloth from the basket with a stick, striking Eldon at the far right, in the face, who says: 'I am a poor old man'. The two figures behind and to the right of Dawson are Philip Crampton and Spring Rice. Signed with monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'AN IRISH ROW'. The publisher's details printed below: 'Published by Thos. McLean, 26, Haymarket, March 13, 1832.'. A small, circular blind stamp at lower left: 'THOs. MCLEAN'. Printer's details below the border at lower left: 'Printed by Meifred Lemercier & Co. 24 Leicester Square'. Printed above the border at upper right: 'HB Sketches No 184.'.
