Large Vessel
Potter: Roberts, David (b.1947)
Coiled clay, raku-fired, crazed white with pale smoke-grey elliptical decoration.
Coil built and raku fired ceramic vessel (porcelain/T-material), near spherical shape but with a high shoulder, a not-quite-circular opening at the top, Biscuit fired to 1050oc, raku fired to c.875-900oc and surface ground after each firing to leave a smooth creamy-white surface with the slight irregularities and tiny pockmarks of natural stone. Designs created by applying layers of slip removed after raku firing to reveal three sets of concentric soft, light ellipses which seem to be almost shadows and in, rather than on, the surface – suggesting the patterns found in eroded pebbles and stones on a beach. The markings shade to deep charcoal on the underside, which is rounded.

David Roberts (b.1947) is a leading practitioner in raku ceramics. He became a full-time potter in 1981, following a decade as an art teacher, and now lives and works at Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. His large vessels are coil built, using a clay mix of ‘T’ material and porcelain. Roberts abandoned glazing in the in the early 1990s and creates his surface effects through smoke, generated byraku firing. aided by slips and resists - evoking the natural surfaces found in landscape and on the sea shore. He is widely acknowledged as responsible for introducing modern large-scale raku in Europe.
