The 'Elephant' Mark below the monarch's portrait denotes the gold was supplied by the Royal African Company from West Africa. The 'Royal African Company' was founded in 1660 as 'The Company of Royal Adventurers Trading to Africa' by Charles II and in 1668 the first coin (this coin) was issued using gold supplied from this Company.
