Description

After the painting by Sir Martin Archer Shee, P.R.A. (1769-1850), (c.1842; Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge). Bowstead graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge as Doctor of Divinity in 1834 and was a Fellow and Tutor at the College until 1838. He became an Anglican clergyman and was Bishop of Lichfield from 23 January 1840 - 11 October 1843. Three quarter length, wearing a rochet and black tippet and standing in front of a curtain, looking towards the left. He holds a volume of 'Butler's Analogy' (Joseph Butler [1692-1752]) upright with spine facing outwards on a table to the left.

Mezzotint, printed in black ink. 'First proof' before title with artists' names engraved in uppercase roman letters at lower left and right: 'Painted by Sir Martin Archer Shee, P.R.A.' …. 'Engraved by Henry Cousins'. A shield with Bowstead's arms as Lord Bishop of Lichfield engraved below. 'First Proof' engraved to the left of the shield and a facsimile of the sitter's signature printed to the right: 'J. Lichfield'. The publication line printed below: 'London, Published June 1 1842 by Dominic & Paul Colnaghi & Co, Publishers to the Queen, 14 Pall Mall East and at Cambridge by Robert Roe'. Inscribed in graphite in the lower margin: '275'. On the verso in graphite: 'The Right Rev.D James Bowstead D.D. / Lord Bishop of Litchfield [sic] / Engraved by Henry Cousins, from a painting by / Sir Martin Archer Shee, P.R.A.'. See also P.14979-R, a fully-lettered proof after title with open letters.
