(After)
After the tondo panel painting by Carlo Dolci (c.1635; ?Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 46.28). The Virgin, at far right, holds the standing figure of the Christ child on her knee who looks out at the viewer and makes a sign of benediction with his raised right hand. The young John the Baptist is seen at the far left, his hands clasped together in prayer looking up at the Christ.
History note: VanSittart gave 1,485 engravings to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1879 and this mezzotint was probably included within this group. The number written in pen and ink on the verso presumably relates to Vansittart's own cataloguing system and that written in graphite on the recto to some kind of count by curators at the time of the acquisition. Curatorial annotations in Nagler numbers 'Maria mit dem Jesuskinde, nach C. Dolce, 1768: rund in 4' as '28' with a reference to a Lord Fitzwilliam print album, 33.A.10, which once contained mezzotints. The annotation indicates that an impression of this plate was 'n[umber] 130' in the album. The mezzotints from this album have since been mounted separately, but '130' does not appear to be among them - CHECK to see if still in ALBUM?
