Description

After a painting by an unknown artist, attributed to Murillo ('Merrellio') in the 18th century, but which by the late nineteenth century was categorised (along with a companion painting of a young girl making lace also reproduced in mezzotint by Okey, see BM 2010,7081.2657), as 'doubtful and spurious' (William Stirling Maxwell, Essay towards a catalogue of prints engraved from the works of Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez and Bartolome? Este?ban Murillo (London, 1873), p.137). Three-quarter-length, seated and facing left. A ball of cloth on her lap, knitting with bone needles, yarn over her knee. A stick resting inside her left elbow. She wears a pale shawl around her head and there is a large hole in her dress on the sleeve of her left arm.

Notes

History note: VanSittart gave 1,485 engravings to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1879 and this mezzotint was probably included within this group. The number written in pen and ink on the verso presumably relates to Vansittart's own cataloguing system and the number written in graphite on the verso to some kind of count by curators at the time of the acquisition.
