Description
After the painting by Murillo (1670-1680; exh. B.I., 1839, no. 108, as 'The Assumption of the Virgin' when it was in the collection of William Ralph Cartwright (1771-1847), Aynhoe, Northamptonshire as descended from John Blackwood; ?Dayton Art Institute, Ohio, U.S.A., 2003.5). The Virgin standing in the clouds in the hollow of a crescent moon looks up towards the left. Her hand are crossed at her breast. There are five Cherubs at her feet; two at lower left which hold roses and lilies, one directly behind her drapery to the left, and two at lower right, one of which holds a palm and stretches his right hand upwards. Two groups of three Cherubim to upper left and upper right.
Notes
History note: VanSittart gave 1,485 engravings to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1879 and this mezzotint was probably included within this group. The number written in pen and ink on the verso presumably relates to Vansittart's own cataloguing system and the number written in graphite on the verso to some kind of count by curators at the time of the acquisition.

Inscribed in graphite at lower left: 'Murillo' and in pen and ink at lower right: 'McArdell'. Inscribed on the verso in pen and ink: '6923' and in graphite: 'Vansittart Collection'; '512'. McArdell would have seen this painting by Murillo in the collection of John Blackwood from around 1760. See Notes.
