Description

After the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds of Lady Catherine Pelham Clinton, later Catherine Bouverie, Viscountess Folkestone (1776-1804), (1781, exh. Free Society, 1782, no. 118; Mannings, 380; Private Collection). As a child, wearing a lace cap and ribbon bow and sash around a white dress and shoes with rosettes, throwing corn to a flock of hens with her extended right hand, looking towards the right. Landscape background.

Note

Mezzotint. A modern impression from the old plate as reworked by George Zobel and published by Colnaghi in 1904 (see Russell/Frankau and curatorial inscription on old mount). The inscription space is blank. A curatorial hand has added the the artists' names in graphite below the platemark: 'Sir Joshua Reynolds pinx' and 'J.R. Smith sc.'. Colnaghi blindstamp in inscription space at lower left: 'P&D Colnaghi & Co / London [?] / 13 & 14 Pall Mall East'. Smith's plate was first published on 1st February 1782. P.65-1954 is a scratched letter proof of the plate.
