Description

After the painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1820; exh. R.A. 1822, no. 134; sold Christie's, London, British Pictures 1500-1850, 22 November 2006, lot 32, from a private collection). Portrait of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, K.G., K.B., M.P. (1769-1852), standing, half-length, facing front, his right arm crossed in front towards his left arm. Wearing a military-style cloak around evening clothes of jacket, waistcoat and cravat with the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece on a ribbon around his neck.

Engraving and etching on chine collé, printed in black ink. Scratched letter proof with artists' names scratched onto the plate below the image to left and right: 'Painted by Sir T Lawrence PRA'; 'Eng.d by Wm Dean Taylor'. An alternative title to that published is scratched in uppercase open roman letters below: 'DUKE OF WELLINGTON'. Publication details scratched below at lower centre: 'London Published by Colnaghi, Son & Co, Pall Mall East / 1827'. Inscribed in graphite in the margins: 'N.1'; 'presented by Dominick Colnaghi Esq / 14 Pall Mall East'. Inscribed on the verso in graphite: 'India [India paper, i.e. chine collé], £3.3 [£3 and 3 shillings]'; '1' encircled.
