Description

After the portrait by Madame Varillat. Three-quarter-length, facing front and looking out at the spectator. Dressed in military uniform, holding a plumed hat under his left arm and the hilt of his sword with his left hand. Pointing with the first finger of his right hand to a manuscript on a table which can be read to the left: 'An Act / to abolish / the Punishment / of public / whipping / of female / offenders / 7th July / 1817' and to the right: 'SPEECH / OF / [Lieutena] NT GENERAL / THORNTON / HIS MOTION / IN / [HO] USE OF COMMONS / 7th OF MAY 1818 / DECLARATIONS'. Three books on shelf behind and to the left with spines lettered: 'Campaigns / Flanders / Holland / Germany'; 'Edmund / Burke'; 'Hawkins / Browne'.

Mezzotint. Engraved on the plate with artists' names at lower left: 'Painted by Madame Varillat' and lower right: 'Engraved by C. Turner'. Title and dedication engraved in sloping script to either side of a shield with printed key at the centre: 'Lieutenant General William Thornton / First elected Representative in Parliament for New Woodstock 5th Oct.r 1812 / To the Corporation and Freemen of which Borough This Portrait is gratefully inscribed'. Publication details engraved at lower centre: 'London, Pub.d Dec.r 29, 1818 by C. Turner, 50 Warren S.t, Fitzroy Square'. Inscribed in graphite at upper centre: '34'. Inscribed on the verso in graphite: '17'.
