Description

After the portrait by Rawlinson (c.1820; The Royal Society, RS.9737). Half-length portrait of the geologist, John MacCulloch (1773-1835), seated and resting his left hand on the arm of the chair. His right hand holds a pen poised over a sheet of paper on a table to the left. MacCulloch wears a long, plush, double-breasted jacket with a fur collar over dark trousers, his left leg crossed over his right. His white shirt is open at the collar in an informal manner without a cravat. A seal hangs below his coat to the left.

Notes

History note: There may have been a Guernsey connection relating the donor and this portrait of MacCulloch. Mrs Henry Melvill Gwatkin, nee Lucy de Lisle Brock, was the daughter of the Rev. Daughter of Rev. Thomas Brock, who was vicar of St John's church on Guernsey.
