Description

Muff glass decorated en grisaille with details etched with a needle. Fire is shown as a full length, long-haired classical figure. He wears a cuirass-like tunic with short sleeves, short breeches with the right leg rolled up, and a billowing voluminous cloak. In his raised left hand he holds a flame and in his right, a grenade, shown as a sphere with four flames issuing from it. On the ground on the left there is a salamander in a fire, and on the right further back, a small crowd of robed figures and one kneeling before an altar with a flaming sacrifice on it, creating a pall of smoke. In an oval lead with a suspension loop at the top.

History note: Purchased at Christie's, 25th July, 1924; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
