Description

Gu-shaped vase. Hard paste porcelain, painted underglaze in blue and overglaze in red, pale red, aubergine, green, violet, and black enamels and gold. Cylindrical body flaring to a wide trumpet mouth. The lower part of the cylinder curves outwards to a 'shoulder', and then contracts to join the deep, tapering foot, where there is a pronounced groove. The body is decorated with two vertical shaped panels bordered in underglaze blue and gilt, containing the ho-ho bird amongst branches of flowering prunus, the other with two ducks among rocks and flowering prunus. The panels are separated by floriated scroll in underglaze blue. Above are four smaller shaped panels containing bamboo reserved on a red ground; three peony blooms on underglaze blue and gilt ground; kilin with cloud scrolls and three chrysanthemum blooms. Around the trumpet-shaped mouth is an irregular pattern of large and small honeycomb containing flower heads. The gilding round the rim has worn away leaving a violet residue of colloidal gold. The lower part of the interior of the vase is unglazed. Inside the mouth are two scrolling flower sprays in red and gold. The incised groove round the foot is painted in underglaze blue below which is a frieze of red scroll.
