Hard paste porcelain painted underglaze in blue and overglaze in red, pale red, green, and yellow enamels, and gold. Circular with rounded sides and lightly scalloped rim, resting on a low tapering footring. The lip edged with pale brown glaze. The interior is decorated in the centre with a ho-ho bird (phoenix) rising upwards encircled by its colourful tail feathers within a double line circle. The cavetto is decorated with scrolling aoi foliage beneath a trellis - pattern border. The reverse is covered with continuous scroll with three flower heads with tendrils and red cloud scrolls. Five spur marks.

Aoi is not a real leaf because of the internal spirals, but a 'designer leaf' found in China, and also used as a family logo. Very rare on Japanese scrolling.
