Description

White marble, carved in the round. The figure is draped in a robe of many folds, leaning with her left hand upon a tree stump. Her head is lowered and looking slightly to her right, and her right forefinger is laid against her cheek. Her hair is drawn back into a knot, with a garland of rose-buds round her head. She wears sandles. Signed and dated on a bole of the tree stump 'ALBERTONI ROMA/1845'

Note

The statue was commissioned by the testator from Albertoni, a pupil of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen, in Rome during the winter of 1843. Maude had travelled to Italy in October 1843. When Maude wrote his will on 9 August 1944, the statue was as yet unfinished and still with Albertoni in Rome (see notes for excerpt from his will.)
