The statue was commissioned by the testator from Albertoni, a pupil of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen, in Rome during the winter of 1843. Maude had travelled to Italy in October 1843. When Maude wrote his will on 9 August 1944, the statue was as yet unfinished and still with Albertoni in Rome (see notes for excerpt from his will.)
