Description

Terracotta, hand-built (coiled), burnished and fired in an oxidising atmosphere. Lower section of spherical form with narrow neck widening out to form wider opening, one side with a sharp right angle below.

Notes

History note: Formerly in the collection of Jeremy Greenwood and Alan Swerdlow, who purchased it from an exhibition of Odundo's work at the Bluecoat Art Centre, Liverpool, in 1985.

Note

This vessel was made during a period in which Odundo was particularly interested in the forms of historic armour. The sharp angled top section of this vessel is after a fifteenth-century gothic bevor (a piece of plate armour designed to protect the neck), which Odundo had seen on display in the Wallace Collection, London.

This vessel was previously on loan to the Fitzwilliam for inclusion in the exhibition, 'Magdalene Odundo in Cambridge' (5 October 2021 - 24 July 2022).
