Old Rose
Draughtsman: Canton workshop
A watercolour drawing from the album PD.132-1973. This is a Chinese export watercolour depicting a flowering rose branch. It shows a blooming pink rose with many layered petals. The petals transition from darker pink to lighter tones to give a dimensional quality. There are several thorny stems branching off at different points. The plant displays the characteristic compound leaves of roses; some leaves show brown edges. On the right side are two rose buds with spiky, reddish sepals. The painting demonstrates the fine brushwork characteristic of Chinese export art from the late 18th or early 19th century, combing traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting style and Western botanical illustration.
