Description

Soft-paste porcelain, slip-cast, lead-glazed, and painted in green, yellow, pink, red, brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The figure is on an approximately square base with rounded corners, decorated with a frill picked out in gold. The boy sits on a tree stump, with a smaller stump to his right supported on a small stump. He holds his hands up over the brazier and leans slightly towards it. He wears a pink coat with gold buttons on the pockets and bows on the shoulders, green breeches, and black shoes with bows on the front. The brazier is black with a yellow and red flame, and the tree trunk and support for the brazier are streaked in yellow, brown and green. In a set of four figures representing the Seasons.

Note

This model and its three companion Seasons were based on Meissen prototypes and were attributed to Longton Hall, near Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. It is now considered that they were probably made at Vauxhall, see Documentation, Spero, 2003 and Massey, 2014.
