Heart is an example of the 'Tutti Frutti' earthenwares which are one of Kate Malone's specialities, and are made using 'multiple fired earthenware glazes' finished with a 'special effect coloured glaze'. Each piece may go through ten or twelve firings to produce the desired effect.
Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Kate Malone works in three areas of ceramics: firstly ‘one-off’ studio pieces, secondly with architects, designers and public art agencies, and thirdly making short-run production pieces to provide a more affordable range of work. Her work is based on the natural forms of the sea and land as she is absorbed with the wonders of nature as well as with the alchemy of ceramic glaze technology. Kate Malone: ‘This piece … has a slight musical connection in the simple fact that when making the piece it felt it was becoming slightly like a stringed instrument … I then went to the music section of the V&A and had a good look … it was not a special study, but I did think one day it might go further … but as of yet has not. I did learn the fiddle at a very basic level at school and loved that scroll on a violin … which is strong in my memory. I rely on intuition while making my work, using the store in the brain that is unconsciously present … so sense that perhaps that childhood fascination was showing through in this piece.’ A life history interview with Kate Malone is available at http://sounds.bl.uk/Oral history/Crafts.
