Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a man standing beside a candlestick in the form of a tree trunk with a nozzle at the top, painted in polychrome enamels, and gilt.

Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, press-moulded with hand-modelled details, covered overall with pale turquoise-tinted lead-glaze, and painted underglaze in blue, and overglaze in blue, turquoise, green, yellow, pink, red, purple, and pinkish-brown enamels, and gilt. The circular base has incurved sides with six kidney-shaped holes at the front (one blocked by restoration), and a scrolled edge which extends into four low supports. The underside has a squarish ventilation hole under the figure. On the top there is a tree stump which supports the figure, and has a small triangular aperture at the bottom to take an attachment. On the viewer's left there is a tall curving tree trunk bearing applied flowers and foliage which supports a drip pan formed by six leaves, and a candle nozzle. On the right there is a basket filled with fruit. The man stands with his feet apart, his left arm held out in front offering a fruit, and his right arm around the tree. He wears a pink hat with a turquoise underside and gold edge; a white shirt, a pink waistcoat, and a coat with a pink, red, and purple floral pattern, turquoise lining, red collar, gold edges and buttons; red breeches with a turquoise, purple, and gold floral pattern; and pink shoes with a turquoise and gold pom pom on each. Beside his feet there are two blue flowers, two yellow, and one red. The flowers on the tree are of various colours. The basket is yellow and the fruit within it polychrome. The drip pan and candle nozzle are picked out in underglaze blue and gold, and the base in pink, turquoise, and gold. A pair with EC.15B-1938
