Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Youth holding a Basket, slip-cast, and painted over lead-glaze in greyish-blue, bluish-green, flesh, dark pink, orange, a little red, brown, and black enamels, and gilt

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Youth holding a Basket, slip-cast, and painted over lead-glaze in greyish-blue, bluish-green, flesh, dark pink, orange, a little red, brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The underside is glazed and has a circular ventilation hole at the back. The mound base is curved at the back and shaped at the front by scrolls on either side of part of a curved socle. The front is decorated with applied flowers and leaves, and at the back there is a tree stump with short branches on each side bearing applied flowers. The youth stands in front of the stump on his right leg with his left foot raised on a small mound. His head is turned to his right and tilted back slightly. He holds a large wicker basket by the handles at both ends. He wears a greyish-blue hat with a wide brim turned back at the front and held by an orange flower with a gold centre. He has a dark pink coat with gold buttons and edges, a green waistcoat with gold scale pattern and buttons, green breeches with gold bands round the knees, and black shoes each with a blue flower with a gold centre on top. The base is green except for the part socle which is white with moulding and flanking scrolls picked out in gold. The flowers are dark pink, orange and yellow, and blue, and those on the tree white with dark pink centres and blue centres.
