Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Cupid holding a baby in a basket, painted in enamels, and gilt

Soft-paste porcelain, slip cast, lead-glazed, and painted in turquoise-blue, green, pale yellow, flesh-pink, red, pale brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The underside is unglazed and had a large oval ventilation hold in the middle, and three patch marks. The circular low mound base is decorated round the edge with scrolls and rocaille frilling, and has a low tree stump at the back. The Cupid stands on his left leg with his right behind him next to the stump. He has brown eyes and eyebrows, pink cheeks and red lips, and is nude apart from a white headscarf, white socks and black shoes. He holds a small ‘Moses Basket’ containing a baby, covered by a pale yellow blanket, and a drape which passes behind the basket and is held up in his right hand over the viewer’s left end of the basket. The base is painted in pale green and turquoise, and the scrolls are picked out in gold
