Description

Fritware coated in white glaze painted in lustre

Fritware, mould made, coated in a white glaze painted in lustre.
Shape: erect figure of a hawk, hollow, with feet and wings attached to a plinth base
Decoration: seated figures in dotted robes and headdress, reserved on a lustered ground within a medallion, predominate over the body and plinth where they are contrasted by scrolling vegetation painted in lustre. These seated figures in medallions number seven examples on the head, all of roughly equal size; three examples on the chest comprising one large central medallion and two flanking smaller versions; and one large example on the plinth. These seated figure medallions are also painted on the back of the wings where they are interspersed with other medallions containing reserved figures including a mounted horseman or birds. Between the wings and on the front of the legs further seated figures are depicted in reserve but not in medallions. On the underside of the wings running animals, reserved in lustre flank central panels of scrolling vegetation painted in lustre. Finally two eyes and the beak are moulded and painted with lustre. Glaze runs over the edges of the plinth unevenly leaving small but visible sections uncovered.
