Description

Stoneware, possibly covered with a ferruginous wash, incised, and salt-glazed. Bell-shaped with two reeded loop handles and spreading foot. Incised on one side with the inscription: 'Thomas Smeeton &/Mary His Wife 1739', on the other, with two sprays of flowers resembling potentilla, on a wide band between two borders of geometrical pattern.

Note

The overall lustreous brown colour was typical of Nottingham stoneware. It could have been achieved by dipping the pots in a thin coat of iron-bearing slip, but probably occurred naturally as a result of a high iron content in the clay and generous amounts of salt thrown into the kiln during firing.
