Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with Chinese figures and a pair of deer in a landscape, and with an inscription

Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed, and painted in blue. Circular with deep sides, standing on an outward-sloping footring . The inside is decorated with a large circular medallion containing Chinese figures standing in an Oriental landscape. On the outside there are seated and standing Chinese figures, and a stag and a hind standing in an Oriental landscape. Round the rim are the inscriptions: \f1\fs24\lquote MY STAF IN MY HAND SHOWS THAT I AM LEVTENNANT TO Y\super e\nosupersub KING THEN FAITHFVLL I WILL LIVE & DYE LOYALL IN EVERY THING SS\rquote ; outside \lquote OH NOW BE PRAISED OVR WIVES ARE PLEASED & THAT\rquote S BVT NOW & THEN WE WILL FALL TO OVR DRINK & WIL NOT SHRINK FOR WE ARE SVRE THEY WIL SCOLD ANON\rquote . Round the foot: \lquote A DISH OF PVNSH GIVE ME TO DRINK FOR FROM THE SAME I WILL NOT SHRINK 1683\rquote . The initials 'TW' are painted on the base and repeated in monogram.\f0\fs17\par

Notes

History note: Said to have been for a long time in the possession of the Keible family living near Colchester, and to have passed by descent to Mrs George V. Colsell of Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, whose husband sold it after her death. Purchased at Christie's sale on 26 July 1909, lot 127 by Mr Stonor for Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, Trinity College, Cambridge.

Note

Attributed to Lambeth by Rackham in 1935, but the calligraphy and aspects of the decoration suggest that it was probably made at Brislington

This is the second earliest English delftware punchbowl known. The earliest, dated 1681, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (C.62-1964).
