Seaworn Jar
Potter: Eastop, Geoffrey
Thrown reduced stoneware, decorated with greenish-grey slip, and semi-matt glaze
Grey stoneware, thrown, decorated with slip, and semi-matt glaze, and fired. Of inverted baluster form with a short cleft on the handle side; short cylindrical neck with vertical rim, and semi-circular, upward-sloping spout, higher on one side than the other; and horizontal loop handle over the cleft in the body. The jar is decorated with an approximately circular area of greenish-grey mottled slip round the handle, and another echoing the shape of the vessel down the front.

Geoffrey Eastop (1921– 2014) studied at the Croydon School of Art and Goldsmiths' College. From 1956-62, he worked with Alan Caiger-Smith at Aldermaston Pottery, then started his own pottery in south Berkshire. He worked at Fawley Bottom between 1969 and 1984, often collaborating with the artist John Piper.
