Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome with a man in a garden and floral sprays

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed greyish-white and painted in blue, green, yellow, and red. The plate is circular with eight arcs round the edge, and has a slightly sloping rim, shallow curved sides and flat centre with recessed base. On the front five reserved panels are delineated by an undulating powdered manganese-purple frame. The central area is painted in polychrome with a man standing beside a fence, a rock, flowers and foliage. Two winged insects flying overhead. The spaces on the rim are occupied by a floral spray.

History note: Said to have come from the Marquis of Northampton’s collection; a sale at Ashby-de-la Zouche; bought with a pair by Mr Withers, 42 Silver Street, Leicester from whom purchased for 6s.0d. on 13 June 1895 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
