Grey salt-glazed stoneware decorated with incised flowers and foliage reserved in a cobalt-blue ground

Grey stoneware, thrown, with applied handle, and incised decoraton reserved in a cobalt-blue ground painted before salt-glazing; pewter cover. The cylindrical tankard has a loop handle to the top of which is attached a hinged pewter thumbpiece in the shape of a shell, and low domed cover. The top and bottom of the sides have a narrow border with a simple design of continuous dotted points and curves with spots of blue at intervals. The main field is incised with a large slanting stem with two large lanceolate leaves with scalloped edges, a tulip and a bud, on either side of which is a vertical coiling stem with four circular flower with scalloped edges. The plants are reserved in a dark cobalt-blue ground stopping short of the area on either side and under the handle which is undecorated. undecorated.
