Description

Slipware dish slip-trailed with figures of a man and woman, each holding a flower, surrounded by a trellis border broken at the top by their names, THoMAS; :SARAϽT(both Ss back to front).

Pale red earthenware, thrown, the front coated in white slip, and slip-trailed in brown, dark-brown and white, and lead-glazed. The reverse is undecorated, but appears to have been given a thin wash of dark brown slip around the sides and rim. The dish is circular with a broad sloping and warped rim, deep curved sides and flat centre. In the middle are a standing man and woman, each holding a flower, with a stylized leaf on each side of them, and two leaves and a bud below the man. The rim is decorated with trellis pattern in two shades of brown, broken at the top by a panel slip trailed with their names, THoMAS; :SARAϽT(both Ss back to front). The outlines of the figures, leaves, flowers, and lettering are jewelled with dots of white slip.
