Tin-glazed earthenware barrel painted in greyish-green, yellow, manganese-purple, a little red, and black with vine sprays and horizontal stripes
Earthenware, pierced, tin-glazed, and painted in greyish-green, yellow, manganese-purple, a little red, and black. The sides of the barrel are divided into three sections by slightly raised hoops, and the circular ends are recessed. One end has a small hole near the edge to take a spigot, and there is a larger rimmed hole in the middle section on one side for a bung. The sides are encircled by four pairs of a black and a yellow horizontal band to create three sections. The central, wider section, is decorated with two vine sprays tied by a red ribbon below the hole for the bung. The narrower upper and lower sections each have a shorter spray of vine leaves. Both ends of the barrel are decorated with a vine plant bearing five small bunches of grapes.
History note: Fenton, Cranbourne Street, London (probably S.G. Fenton), from whom bought for £2 0.0. about 1898 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

The attribution of the barrel to Nevers is uncertain. If it was used, the barrel would probably have been supported on a wooden cradle so that the bung hole and the decoration were uppermost.
