Description

Tin-glazed earthenware plate, painted in blue, green, yellow and dark puce enamels with floral sprays and a shell edge

Tin-glazed earthenware, painted in blue, green, yellow, and dark puce enamels. The plate is circular with a wavy six-sided edge, sloping side, and flat centre. The central area is occupied by a bunch of foliage and flowers, including a large rose, and a tulip, and on the sloping rim there are three floral sprays and three smaller sprigs. The edge is painted in puce to resemble a shell edge.

Note

The interlaced Cs mark indicates that the plate was made during the period of ownership of the Niderviller pottery and porcelain factory by Adam Philippe de Custine between 1771and 1784. He purchased the factory from Jean-Louis Beyerlé on 6 December 1770.
