Description

Earthenware dish slip-coated on the inside, and decorated with trailing and feathering under lead-glaze

Buff earthenware, press-moulded over a hump mould, coated in cream slip, slip-trailed in brown and feathered, under yellowish lead-glaze; the exterior is undecorated. The dish is circular with deep curved sides and a crinkled edge, produced by making adjacent impressions with an oval ended implement. The interior has a pair of slightly raised bands running round it about 2.5 cm below the outer edge, and in the middle scarcely visible under the slip coating, the initials and date 'SM/1727'. The entire surface is decorated with three areas of wavy feathering alternating with two wide and two narrow bands of fine trailed lines which can be viewed as horizontal or vertical.
