Description

Soft-paste porcelain vase with mask handles and bird finial, the sides and cover pierced, and decorated with applied flowers, and painting in enamels

Soft-paste porcelain, with pierced, and applied moulded, and modelled decoration, painted overglaze in green, bluish-green, yellow, pink, puce, red and purple enamels., and gilt. The beaker-shaped vase is spirally fluted up to about 3 cm below the rim. Above that point the sides are pierced by diamond-shaped holes to form a trellis with small flowerheads at the intersections. About 5 cm up from the base there is an outward-curving 'frill' with a row of flowerheads above it. On each side there is a female mask surrounded by applied flowers, and on the front and back, sprays of convolvulous and other flowers. Insects, moths, and butterflies are painted in the spaces. The domed cover is pierced by four sets of diamond-shaped holes each forming a diamond shape with raised spots at the edges and intersections. Above them are ten convoluvulous flowers and leaves surrounding a perching bird which forms the finial. The gilding is restricted to a gold line round the upper edge of the vase. One of a garniture of three vases.
