Description

Hard-paste porcelain painted in enamels and gilt

Hard-paste porcelain, moulded, and painted overglaze in blue, turquoise blue, yellowish and greyish green, flesh pink, pale purple, pale and dark brown, and a little gilding. The closed and partly concave underside is glazed in the middle, and has a round ventilation hole at the back. The eight-sided base with a rocky top, and a tree stump at the back is painted in shades of greenish-and greyish green and brown. Venus, nude except for a pale purple circlet in her pale brown hair, stands on her left leg with right knee relaxed, looking down towards Cupid whom she holds by his left hand as he flies towards her from the viewer's left. She holds his purple quiver in her right hand and has its turquoise strap over her arm. Another putto sits on a pale purple drape on the ground to the right. A gold line runs round the edge of the base.
