Fritware coated in a white slip painted in blue and brown under a colourless glaze
Fritware, probably mould made, coated in a white slip and painted in two shades of blue and brown under a colourless glaze
Shape: hemispherical bowl with plain rim, sits on a low foot ring
Interior: all decoration is painted in blue. Below the rim a vegetal frieze comprises flower heads, curling leaves and scrolling stems. In the roundel a scholar figure kneels in a landscape of pagodas and vegetation.
Exterior: palmette leaves are reserved in blue and enclosed within brown lobbed medallions. Between the palmettes brown trellis work is arranged in arabesque forms. The glaze runs over the foot ring unevenly. The underside of the foot ring is glazed and marked with three blue tassels.
History note: From the Joseph Dixon Collection, sold at Christie’s, 16th-17th March, 1911, probably part of lot 133, sold for 20 guineas with another vessel
