Description

White-salt-glazed teapot inscribed 'GREEN:/TEA'

Off-white salt-glazed stoneware. The globular body stands on three moulded paw feet. It has a short cylindrical neck, a slightly curved spout and a roll handle with an upward 'kick' at the lower end. On each side it has the words GREEN:/TEA: surrounded by stylized leaves linked by scrolls. The circular domed cover has a capstan finial and is decorated with applied plant motifs: a trefoil leaf, a daisy head and a small spray of leaves.

Note

Green tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, and was one of several different types of tea available in the eighteenth century. The leaves have not been oxidized, and today Green Tea is considered to be beneficial to health.
