Description

Hard-paste porcelain painted in enamels, and gilt

Hard-paste porcelain, moulded, painted overglaze in blue (a little), green, yellow, pale pink, puce- pink, flesh, red (a little), brown, grey, and a very little, black, and gilt. The underside is open and its interior is glazed. The group is supported on a rectangular base with scrolls on the corners, rococo style pink and gold foliage along the sides, and streaks of green on the top. Spring stands in the centre, with her left leg extended behind her, She has long brown hair entwined by a green ribbon, and wears an off-the shoulders pink dress with a puce-pink and gold floral pattern and a puce-pink lining and falling collar with a gold edge. There is a pocket slit on her right hip beside which are four green ribbons. She has a wreath of polychrome flowers over her left arm, and lifts up her skirt with her right hand to reveal a putto representing Winter who is sitting warming his hands over a small brown brasier with red and yellow flames. Another representing Autumn is astride a pale grey barrel behind her, and a third representing Summer reclines on a sheaf of corn in front of her with his feet over the viewer’s right edge of the base.

Note

Wilhelm Christian Meyer modelled this group in 1769. The figure of Flora was inspired by the Flora Farnese, now in the Museo Nazionale in Naples, but adapted to the Rococo style. The figure is differently clad, and also differs in holding a wreath instead of a bunch of flowers, and having its head turned to proper right instead of left.
