Description

White stoneware with brown slip details and salt-glaze. The lovers are seated on a rounded three sided hollow rock base under an arbour formed of separately moulded vine leaves rising from the rock behind them. The lady (on the viewer's right) has her right arm around the gentleman's waist, and his left arm is around her shoulder with the hand resting on the left side of her head The gentleman is seated with his legs crossed. He has raised her skirt to reveal her right lower leg, and the lady places her hand on his as if to prevent further advances - or perhaps to encourage them? She wears a round cap, a jacket with elbow-length sleeves, and three ribbons across her stomacher, over a long full skirt. He wears a cravat and shirt, a waistcoat ,and a coat with eight buttons over knee-length breeches. Both figures have rather full cheeks, and their eyes are picked out in dark brown slip.
