Bacchus representing Autumn
Production: uncertain
Lead-glazed earthenware painted in enamels
Cream earthenware, moulded, lead-glazed and painted in green, yellow, flesh pink, purple, and brown enamels. The underside of the square base is concave, closed, and glazed, and has a small ventilation hole off centre. The figure stands on a low round mound with a tree stump at the back, coloured like the base in green with random streaks of brown. Bacchus stands with his weight on his right leg and has his left slightly bent at the knee and crossed over in front of his right. He has his head turned to his left, and rests his left hand on the top of the tree stump. With his right hand he holds up a small yellow cup in front of his chest. He has short brown hair, and is nude apart from a purple drape which passes over his left shoulder and around the lower part of his body.

This figure was probably part of a set of Seasons with C.935-1928, Ceres representing Summer. Their manufacturer is uncertain. It might have been made by David Wilson, who took over the Church Works, Hanley from his father Robert Wilson in 1798 and continued until 1820.
