Description

Tin-glazed earthenware dish with a scalloped edge, painted in blue with a central star motif and a lambrequin border

Buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed, and painted in gradations of dark blue. The dish has a scalloped rim, deep curved and fluted sides, and stands on a footring which is pierced by two suspension holes. The centre is decorated with a eight-petalled flower imposed on an eight-pointed star surrounded by formal plant motifs. The upper edge is encircled by a border of eight linked lambrequins.

This compotier was bought in Rouen and was attributed to Rouen by Bernard Rackham in his Catalogue of the Glaisher Collection . . . (1935) but it has also been attributed to Lille. See the Documentation.
