Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, greyish-green, yellow, and red with a stem of berries and leaves between and horizontal stripes

Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed and painted in blue, greyish-green, yellow and dull red. Barrel-shaped with an applied loop handle. The sides are decorated with a horizontal stem of berries and leaves, between pairs of yellow and green horizontal bands. The back of the handle is painted in blue with four spots, a pair of vertical strokes, and six spots reducing in size towards the bottom. A circular hole at the top of the handle may have been for the attachment of a hinged cover.

Note

This object was catalogued as a mug by Bernard Rackham in 1935, but had been bought as a mustard pot, which, if it had its lid, seems more likely.
