Girl representing America from a set of Continents or Four Quarters of the Globe
Factory: Derby Porcelain Factory
Soft-paste porcelain figure of America, painted in enamels, and gilt; inscribed 'AMERICA' on the front of the base
Soft-paste porcelain figure of America, slip-cast, with moulded details, painted overglaze in blue, turquoise, green, yellow, pale tan, orange, pink, purple, and black enamels, and gilt. The closed underside has three patch marks, and a circular ventilation hole near the back. The approximately circular base has incurved scrolled sides with three kidney-shaped holes on the left and two on the right, and one on each side not pierced, and, on the front, an asymmetrical cartouche inscribed ‘AMERICA’ in gold. At the back there is a broad tree trunk with two short lateral branches, covered in applied blue and yellow flowers and leaves. In front of it is a purple alligator with its head on the viewer’s left. The boy stands on his left leg and rests his right on the neck of the alligator. He looks to his right, and holds two feathers in his right hand in front of him, and has a small bow under his left arm. He has tanned skin and black hair, and wears a blue, orange and pink feather head band, a white skirt with feathers of the same colours down the front and at the sides, and has a quiver slung on his left side from a gold strap over his right shoulder. The flowers on the ground on the front of the base, and on the branches of the tree are pink, orange, yellow, and blue, mainly with yellow centres. The base is picked out in turquoise, pink, and gold.
