Description

Dish, hard-paste porcelain, painted in iron-red enamels, underglaze blue, and gilding with a Chinese lady and an European gentleman in a horse-drawn carriage.

Dish. Hard-paste porcelain painted predominantly in iron-red enamels, and gilding with underglaze blue. The shallow flared sides resting on a very low slightly tapered foot and moulded with twelve tulip-like blooms beneath the barbed rim edged in gilding. The interior with a large central medallion depicting a Chinese lady and an European gentleman in a frock coat riding in a simple wooden carriage pulled by two dappled horses, a driver holding a whip seated astride one horse and an attendant walking behind holding a large parasol above the heads of the couple; all in iron-red and gilding within a double line border in underglaze blue. The moulded tulips around the cavetto are outlined in underglaze blue and alternately enclosing sprays of lily and peony in iron-red between single lines in underglaze blue round the rim.
