Description

Tapestry depicting the parable of the five wise and the five foolish virgins, who went forth to meet the bridegroom. The virgins are shown in two rows above each other. At the top we see the wise virgins, their lamps raised high, below the foolish ones hold their extinguished lamps and cry into their handkerchiefs. They are all wearing bridal gowns. The upper part of the bodies is frontal but they turn slightly from the waist so that their ornate skirts are seen partly in profile and they overlap a little. The haloed figure at the top left is probably Christ, the bridegroom. The man at the bottom right may be the seller of the oil.
