Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Boy with a Shell, slip-cast.

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Boy with a Shell, slip cast. The underside is unglazed and has a large oval ventilation hole. The rocky base is of elongated oblong shape with slight facets round the edge. At the back there is a tall tree stump with two large leaves and a berry at the top and three lower down at the top of the base. The nude, wavy-haired little boy sits with his right leg forward over the edge of the rock, and his left leg resting on top of it behind him.He supports himself on the rock with his right hand which holds the shell cup. His left arm is bent at the elbow and held in front of him, and he looks towards his hand, which formerly held something.

History note: Dr and Mrs Hugh Statham; Dr Statham died 1967; Mrs Statham died 1970; their daughter, Miss Beryl Statham, by whom lent anonymously in 1970 (Statham Loan 2-1970); bequeathed by Miss Beryl Statham (17/04/1990), accepted by H.M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax, and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum.
