Description

Soft-paste porcelain écuelle with cover and stand, with a bleu nouveau ground, birds, flowers, fruit and garden implements painted in enamels, and gilded.

Soft-paste porcelain, moulded, and decorated with a bleu nouveau ground, painting in blue, green, yellow, orange, dark pink, mauve, pale purple, pale brown, and grey enamels, and gilding. The bowl is circular with two double entwined branch handles and a domed cover with a handle in the form of a laurel branch with leaves and berries. The oval stand has an almost straight edge at the sides, upward curving ends, and a circular depression in the centre for the foot of the bowl. The bowl and stand have two suspension holes in the footring, and the stand has a third filled in with glaze. The cover has one hole. The bleu nouveau ground is decorated round the edges between the reserves with elaborate gilding of circular garlands flanked by pointillé pedestals, scrolling foliage, and floral sprays, and in the central depresseion with a wreath of laurel. There are two oval reserves on the bowl; two kidney-shaped reserves on the cover, and two larger kidney-shaped reserves on the stand, all framed by broad bands of tooled gilding. The two reserves on the bowl are of garden scenes: 1. A bird perching on a curved wall beside a pedestal on which is an ovoid vase of flowers, and on the ground to left, an arrangement of fruit. 2. On the right, a grey watering can beside some large fruit, a rake leaning against a bank with two flower pots beside it, and a bird flying overhead. On the cover: 1. A blue vase of flowers on a pedestal with a group of grapes and peaches on the right, and a bird to left, all resting on a marble slab. 2. A blue ovoid vase of flowers, with a basket of roses to left on a marble slab. On the stand: 1. A blue vase of flowers, with a group of fruit to right, and a bird and a plant to left on a marble slab. 2. A yellow ewer with a bird and a basket of flowers and two bunches of grapes to left, a draped curtain to right, and two tassels on cords above. The handles are white with touches of gilding and there are bands of gilding round the foot and rim of the bowl and round the edges of the cover and stand.
