Description

Border sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in a variety of stitches; the edges are turned under and hemmed. The sampler comprises three sections, framed and separated by a rosebud border. The top section includes four alphabets and two sets of numerals. The middle section has the verse' Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand/As the first efforts of an infants hand/And while her fingers on the canvas move/Engage her tender thoughts to see thy love/With thy dear children let her have a part/And mark thy name thyself upon her heart', worked which is has a flower, a tree and a flower pot on each side. The final section includes the inscription 'Ann Jerome/Age n Years/ 1833', and symmetrically arranged around it are detached motifs of flowerpots, birds and flowers.
