Leaf from a Doge’s Commission

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 222 x 153mm, pasted on a nineteenth-century paper mount, verso not visible
DECORATION: Full-page miniature with a kneeling man being presented to the Virgin and Child by St Paul, with God the Father above, and the infant John the Baptist below, set within a frame of architectural ornament in gold with caryatids and winged figures, in the lower border, the arms of the Gradenigo family (silver stairs on a red ground) with motto Sacrificate sacrificium iustitiae et sperate in domino (Ps 4:6).
History note: Commission produced for a member of the Gradenigo family, Venice; Thomas Miller Whitehead, acquired in 1855 (note on back of paper mount)
