The oblong base has a ventilation hole under the tree trunk, moss round the side and front edges, and five scrolled feet with a pierced rocaille motif between the front two. At the back there are two square apertures to take attachments. On the viewer's left there is a semi-circular wall with a central putto's head spewing water into a basin below, and at top left, a vase of flowers. The shepherd stands in front of the tree with his feet apart, holding his bagpipes under his left arm. He wears a black tricorn hat with gold edges, a blue bow, and a red and white striped bow; a white shirt and a yellow neck tie; a pink coat with a yellow lining and gold buttons; a waistcoat with a pink and gold floral pattern over blue and white stripes; dark pink breeches with a different floral pattern; white stockings and black shoes with dark pink and gold ribbons. On the viewer's right, a sheep grazes on moss; in front of the shepherd's feet there is a recumbent white and purplish-grey dog with a yellow collar; and on the left is a recumbent lamb with a blue collar. The base is picked out in turquoise, puce, and gold.
